Spring is just around the corner which means it’s a good time to check your dryer vent for debris build up. Most dryers are used multiple times a week, if not daily. This routine usage creates large amounts of debris build up. Primarily it’s just lent, but could also be home to bird or insect nests. Once a hose line becomes clogged it can prevent the heat from properly exiting out the vent opening. This can result in the debris becoming extremely dry to the point it will catch on fire.
There are only a few ways to clean your dryer hose. The cheapest & easiest way is to use your hands. Put on some gloves, detach the hose, & then remove any debris that maybe blocking the path to the exterior vent opening. If you do not want to use your hands you can purchase a hose cleaning tool at most major home improvement stores (brush pictured below). It’s always good to check the condition of the hose & vent from both the exterior & interior.
While inspecting your interior hose & exterior vent make sure there are no signs of fire damage, animals/insects, cracking, molding, dry rotting, splitting, etc. If you think your hose looks in disrepair, or it may be heavily clogged, do not hesitate to replace the existing fixtures. It will cost under $20 & can prevent a fire from occurring. Lastly, remember to clean your dryer vent yearly to avoid fires.
