Grilling Safety

Summer has arrived & it’s time to get grilling. Here are 10 tips to help make sure this grilling season is a safe one:

  • Make sure the grilling area is clear of any debris on the ground as well as hanging from above. If a fire does start this will help prevent it from spreading.

  • Separate the “play area“ and the “grill area“. Keep your pets & kids away from the grill to prevent unplanned trips to the ER/Veterinarian.

  • Make sure you are grilling on a level and stable surface.

  • Double check that your gas or propane grill is shut off and if charcoal is being used always properly extinguish the coals before leaving unattended.

  • Make sure your grill is clean & free of rust, dust, or animals. A nonmetal bristle grill brush is recommended for cleaning.

  • If using propane or gas make sure you check your connecting lines for damage to prevent leaks.

  • Always start your grill with the lid open & always cut off the grill with the lid open. This prevents gas/propane from building up inside the grill which could lead to injury.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher close to put out any out of control fire. If that is not an option keep a large pitcher of water or even a water hose next to the grill to extinguish any fires.

  • Always position the grill where you want it before igniting. Do not try to move the grill once it is lit.

  • Wait until the grill has cooled to cover it. Keeping your grilled covered will keep it cleaner, free of animals, & over all will make it last longer.

If you follow these 10 tips your Summer grilling season should be filled with nothing but good times!
