9 tips to help prevent pipes from bursting:
Winter weather is here which means there is a possibility of freezing temperatures and ice. We want to make sure our clients know the importance of being prepared, winterizing their home, and being attentive while outside.
1) Make sure to know the locations of your shut-off valves in the event a pipe bursts. Is the shut-off inside or outside? Find out if you need a water key to turn off the water; sometimes you can use large pliers instead of a water key.
2) Allow a small trickle of water to run overnight, preferably through a faucet on an outside wall or farthest from the street.
3) Open your cabinets, where the sinks are located, so warmer air can circulate below.
4) Periodically flush toilets in your home to allow water to flow.
5) Put covers over any outside faucets to prevent freezing.
6) Leave your heat turned to “auto” and the thermostat set at no less than 62 degrees, especially if you will be gone more than 24 hours.
7) For proper drainage, make sure the stopper is left up or open in both the kitchen and bath sinks.
8) If going out of town, see if a neighbor, family member, or friend can check your house while you are gone.
9) When not home, do not leave bathroom doors closed.
It’s also important to take proper precautions when driving and walking around your home or community. Walkways, driveways, stairways, entrances and parking lots could have ice accumulation. Please make sure you are being cautious when driving or walking.
